DIY Kitchen Herb Garden

We love cooking with fresh herbs, and our kitchen herb garden makes that possible year round. Making your own is a fun family project for any weekend!

Easy to do herb planters, made with materials you can get at your local hardware and craft store:

We bought our herbs at Home Depot and chose Rosemary, Basil, Oregano, Curly Leaf Parsley, Sage, Chives.

We planted the herbs in organic raised bed soil.

We used galvanized steel buckets bought at Michaels several years ago. These buckets are 5.5" in diameter and 4.5" deep. We drilled a few holes in the bottom for drainage.

We bought 1x6 pine boards from Home Depot and 6 inch hose clamps (stainless steel worm gear clamps). Pre-stain your boards with the stain of your choice (we chose a classic grey stain).

To attach the hose clamps to the boards we pre-drilled a small hole in the clamp then fastened them to the boards with short stainless steel screws. The screws must be short enough to not poke through the back of the boards.

Step 1: Place a single layer of stones

Step 2: Cover stones with soil

Step 3: Remove plant from plastic container or biodegradable cup and place in the bucket

Step 4: Fill the bucket with soil and gently pack down (be sure to leave room for water)

Step 5: Give your new herbs a drink of water mixed with your favorite plant food

Hang your planters on a sunny wall in your kitchen and enjoy your new kitchen herb garden year round. The nice thing about these is you can remove the buckets and put they outside for a little extra sunlight if needed.

ENJOY!
